Job Role: Clinical Coder

 

MPA are currently recruiting a Band 4 Clinical Coder for our public service client based in Belfast.

 

Location – Belfast

Hours of Work – 37.5 hours per week

Salary - £12.86 per hour

 

KEY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Analyse case notes, discharge letters, outpatient letters and other relevant documentation relating to patient diagnosis, operations/procedures and episodes of care.

  • Abstract and translate medical terminology into current diagnostic (ICD) and procedural (OPCS) classification ensuring that a comprehensive record of a patient’s episode is captured and prioritised appropriately.

  • Validate, input and access information using appropriate Clinical and Information Systems in completion of the coding function.

  • Liaise with senior medical staff or other appropriate officers to clarify data anomalies as required.

  • Advise on appropriate codes to use for those using analytic tools to extract coded data.

  • Adhere to the Regional Clinical Coding Policy and relevant Trust policies, procedures and agreements

  • To assist the Regional Clinical Coding Trainer to mark clinical coding exercises completed during Foundation, Refresher and Revision Clinical Coding Courses

  • To assist in preparing training materials for the various courses provided by the Regional Clinical Coding Trainer

  • To assist the Regional Clinical Coding Auditor with the audit process for example in the preparation of materials for audit

  • To feedback to the Regional Clinical Coding team issues/queries arising in Trusts

  • Facilitate shared learning between Health & Social Care Trusts.

  • To co-operate and assist with the monitoring of data quality working closely with the Information Standards & Data Quality team and Regional Data Quality Group

  • To communicate with clinical and professional staff such as Consultants, Nurse Clinical Specialists, Midwives to help achieve resolution to queries

  • Liaise with various staff, both internal and external in order to adhere to deadlines and responding to queries.

  • Work with internal and external staff to provide coding expertise for new/changing services/system

  • Communicate complex coding rules to medical, clinical and administrative staff and external agencies.

  • To upload information as required to the SharePoint site and work with the team to continue to develop the site

  • To sit on working groups which provide best practice regional guidelines for clinical coding departments to meet and achieve all targets while still attaining depth and accuracy.

  • To work with the administrative support staff to ensure minutes, agenda and any other documentation required for the Regional Clinical Coding Forum and other Clinical Coding meetings is updated

  • To contribute to the continuous improvement of the delivery of an efficient and effective customer-focused information service. This will involve gaining an understanding of the work done by and demands placed on managers throughout the organisation.

  • Produce and translate coding reports for assigned department or clinicians.

  • Assist with data quality and other duties as directed by the Regional Clinical Coding Coordinator. These may include:

o   Assisting with Information Team queries re. appropriate codes to use to support information analysis

o   Assisting with queries from the Regional Clinical Coding Department to support development of Northern Ireland coding standards

o   Ensuring that data relating to in-patients and day cases has been recorded accurately on the PAS and amended or reported to the Data Quality team when necessary

o   Printing various PAS/Business Objects reports to identify un-coded patient episodes, etc.

o   Assisting with the preparation of statistical returns - answering queries from the DHSS&PS, Trust Information and Data Quality Teams, Acute Services, etc. as required.

 

 

Experience

·         Demonstrate experience in the use of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point

·         Knowledge of SNOMED CT and other clinical terminologies

 

 

Qualifications

·         The UK National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ)

OR

·         Have a minimum of 5 months experience working in an acute healthcare environment and knowledge of how clinically coded information is used in the HSC

·         Commitment to undertake all mandatory clinical coding courses on commencement of employment and to work towards sitting the UK National Clinical Coding Qualification two years post recruitment
